I'm currently doing this thing where I re-read my old yaois i've read or read new ones and make sure to review all of them.

This is my rant for down and dirty:

4/10

Notes whilst reading-
Major second hand embarrassment.
Artstyle isn’t that good, can be quite cool and different at times but mostly it’s so bad.
Plot is boring and cliche.
Too fast paced
He said top had feelings for him turns out he had feelings for the top all along but top just wanted him to become a male prostitute.
I don’t really enjoy stories like this.
I keep feeling anger throughout reading it like hwy does he keep going back to him IT SO ANNOYING
What the fuck is even happening after the top supposedly died
Too fast paced
Plot is kinda messy
WHAT THE FUCK DOES THE TOP MEAN BY “its a good thing you love me so I can fuk you legally” EW WHAT
EWWWW THEY LIKE MADE THE MC SOOOOO BAD AND LIKE TIWNKIFIED HIMTO THE MAX
Also what happened to the punk dude
EW EW EW TJE LAST CHAPTER GAVE ME SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT, NEVER AGAIN

Overall review:
The story at the start was extremely confusing, I didn’t know what was happening and I assumed the Seme had a crush on the Uke and Uke hated the Same. I was wrong. The Uke had a crush on the Seme the whole entire time and it was revealed in the dumbest way possible. He just woke up one day and decided “hey I actually like this dude so let me sleep with him.” It was written so poorly at the start, like it just felt so messy. I didn’t enjoy the concept or how they randomly threw in characters. Like the punk dude that was there fucking dissapeared after and we don’t know what happened to him it’s clear the author didn’t think about the story properly and probably was just planning the whole thing as they were going. Sure it was interesting at times and I did wonder what was going to happen but to be completely honest it was super cliche and boring. Like when I finally thought something big and new was going to take place the author just adds some overused plot instead.
I hate how the Uke keeps running back to the Seme when the seme so obviously was only interested in the Ukes body. I understand the seme begins developing feelings for the Uke later on but like come on Uke bro like know your worth, why are you running back to that man. sure I understand your ere broke and shit but like are you going to forget how he made you bleed out your ass and lit fucke you in an alley. Like it’s just not it.
Also so much character back stories are forgotten in this. I wan to know more about Charlie, more about the Seme and how he deiced to own a brothel and also mroe about the Uke and how his life was before he gained massive debt. I also want to know how the debt occurred and how he lived his first years of debt as. I have so much questions but like zero answers.
The art style is also shit, like sure at first I thought it was cool and different but the more I read the more I realised what it’s just flat out unappealing. Like why do they randomly gain lips and then randomly have great proportions.
I could rant about how shitty, fast paced, messy this story is forever. But overall it wasn’t that bad. It was defeintly more towards the shit side than the good but it defiently could have been way worse. The ending slightly saved it but honestly I was so close to not continuing it.
its a good thing you love me so I can fuk you legally - this line was the worst thing I have ever read though and probably why I will forever hate the Seme

come and save your cow

last night i took a venture into iranian new wave and watched mehrjui's 1969 film the cow. there is never an occasion where i find nonamerican cinema less valuable than american cinema, whether in its subject matter, style or just its overall charm. this film was no exception to me. the way in which the characters were built felt very effective -- namely masht hassan, of whom we see two sides. the beginning of the film exemplifies how he acts in everyday life: his interactions with his friends; his love for his cow (which we see in an extended scene of him washing her, and another of him searching her stable for anything which could harm her in the night). it is clear that alongside the cow being a very valuable material possession for him, being the only milk cow in the village, he has a true love for her as a companion to him. the way in which he is presented in the former half of the film contrasts dramatically with his actions in the latter half, brought together perfectly by entezami's borderline disturbing performance as he begins to identify with his dead cow, in a way which i assume is brought forth by the immense guilt he feels for not protecting her, as he cries out to hassan for help as though the cow is speaking through him.

masht islam's character too is explored through its binary contrast; his collectedness, care and humanity at the beginning as he tries his hardest to prevent hassan from discovering his cow's death opposing his violence with frustration when hassan refuses to move as they try and take him to the hospital (resulting in him physically abusing him as though he were an animal) -- though throughout the film his sense of authority and control is kept constant.

despite the hatred for american cinema i expressed at the beginning of this post, i always find it fascinating how much new wave filmmakers from any country admires american cinema and uses it as a form of inspiration. mehrjui was majorly inspired by italian neorealism (of which i have seen only a few examples; 71/2 and visconti's work namely). the experimental aspects of this film come through strongly in the cinematography, especially with the shot of hassan standing beneath the light of a window, shouting up at it, as the camera cuts rapidly. the framing of shots from within the cow's stable looking out was something i was very fond of, with the window acting as a second letterbox for the framing of the shot.
